on Marriage & Affairs

Growing up I devoured Disney ideas of love. I still like the Hollywood idea that a man would risk his pride to show the woman he loves that he loves her via a grand romantic gesture, while still remaining somewhat aloof and masculine. Yet, as the daughter of two people who have been separated, fairly amicably, for for 10 years, I have become more and more suspicious of, and unsure of my desire to get married. This is something I will maybe blog about again in the future.

For today, however, I'll just post this thought from Amanda Palmer's blog. I know little about her apart from being fairly sure she's quite creatively and musically "off beat" (thank you to my friend Amy for that adjective) but this article on her marriage is very interesting.

I like this sentence also:

"and most affairs burn hard and fast and then leave you with the smoldering debris of reality."

  1. There's a big difference between an affair and getting married. Her quote is perfect - an affair is hard and fast and often without the commitment that a marriage has. But an affair is also intense and sexy and exciting.

For me marriage wasn't for any reason other than I love my husband completely and can't imagine living my life without him. That's not saying that there are no bad days (because there definitely are and sometimes they extend into bad weeks) but overall we're happy, we laugh a lot and I'm pretty sure that we'll (hopefully) live out our days together. I may change my mind at some stage but I don't feel like it at this stage.

This article from Mamamia raises some similar points - http://www.mamamia.com.au/relationships/nobody-said-it-was-going-to-be-easy/

  2. I was in love with Aladdin as a teenager!

Marriage has become so complicated in that about half actually end up in divorce these days! It is sad that so many people give up too quickly on their commitment to their spouse. At 37 I have still not married and am ok with that. It has taken me a long time but I just met the man of my dreams a year ago and am so glad I never settled.

  3. Marriage is a personal choice for many people. I love being married and so glad to have my hubby by my side. Who knows you might change your mind in the future?!
